Portmann and Hydro: Aluminium innovation with sustainability at the core

From local craftsmanship to forward looking aluminium solutions, Portmann AS has built its business on quality, reliability and continuous development. In partnership with Hydro, the company is further strengthening its sustainability performance, without compromising on product quality or technical standards.

Portmann delivers roller grilles, security grilles, industrial doors and garage doors across Norway, all meeting the strictest European standards for gate solutions. For Portmann, sustainability is embedded throughout the value chain, from product design and material selection to production processes and logistics.

“Our aim is to minimize our environmental footprint, and we seek to work with suppliers that share the same ambition. By focusing on resource efficiency and recycling, we want our solutions to contribute positively both now and in the future,” says Trond Eirik Nilsen, cofounder and CEO of Portmann.

With a clear commitment to lowering its environmental footprint, Portmann works to ensure that its solutions contribute positively, both today and in the future.

Partnership built on innovation and transparency

The collaboration with Hydro is based on joint innovation and development.

“Traceability and transparency throughout the entire value chain helps us reduce and communicate our environmental footprint in a credible way,” says Nilsen.

This approach not only strengthens Portmann’s sustainability performance, but also enhances the value delivered to customers who increasingly expect documented and credible climate action.

    Choosing low-carbon aluminium

To further reduce emissions, Portmann has chosen Hydro’s low-carbon aluminium, Hydro REDUXA.

“We chose Hydro REDUXA aluminium because reducing the carbon footprint of our products is important to us and to our customers, without compromising on quality or performance,” says Nilsen.

From local roots to national presence

Founded in 2003, Portmann began with installation and service of gates and roller shutters before expanding into its own production, including security grilles. In 2013, Portmann acquired aluminium profile rights previously held by Bergen Portsenter, marking an important step into aluminium based manufacturing. As the company grew, it moved in 2019 to modern facilities in Storebotn on Askøy, just outside Bergen.

Looking ahead, Portmann’s ambition is to continuously reduce emissions in both production and products. This includes transitioning more raw materials to low-carbon alternatives, improving energy efficiency in operations and increasing recycling efforts.

With strong local roots, national reach and a partnership focused on responsible material choices, Portmann demonstrates how aluminium solutions can combine durability, performance and measurable climate action, aligned with the expectations of tomorrow’s market.
